Professor Edward Blakely

Professor Ed Blakely is the Director of the PRC, Chair of the Metropolitan Strategy Reference Panel and the Chair of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Sydney . He has received widespread recognition for his achievement in urban planning, research and education. His honours and distinctions include Guggenheim and Fulbright Fellowships, Senior Fellow of the Prague Institute for Global Urban Development of the Prague Institute, Fellowships of the National Academy of Public Administration, appointment by President Clinton to the Presidio Trust, and an Award of the Lincoln Senior Fellow and Visitor at Harvard University . He has also been special advisor to the Mayor of Paris and been presented with the Officer des l'order des Palmes Academiques. Professor Blakely's research is widely recognised internationally as being on the forefront of his discipline. He has published eight books including three editions of Planning Local Economic Development: Theory and Practice, widely regarded as the world's best book on suburban economic development; his principal area of specialisation. A new institute The Edward J Blakely Centre for Sustainable Suburban Development has been established in his honour at the University of California , Riverside . Before taking the Sydney Chair, Professor Blakely held numerous senior academic and academic administrative positions in the USA and Australia . Professor Blakely has considerable experience in urban planning in Australia where he has been a teacher, researcher and a consultant. His lecturing positions at most Australian Universities have been in programs of urban and regional planning. His advisory experience includes work on comprehensive planning projects in the Sydney Region, the academic and professional planning of the University of Western Sydney and technology planning for the City of Sydney . As well as consultant to Planning Ministries in Victoria , Queensland and South Australia . His philosophy in teaching urban planning is to blend professional practice into the educational experience of his students and to integrate all the relevant disciplines into planning education, including the provision of an international dimension.
